Program Specialist

General Function: Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Program Specialist is responsible for the oversight of all programmed activities including but not limited to assisting with staffing, promoting and implementation.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist in pre-camp set up of activities
  2. Assist in pre-camp evaluation of program equipment and structures
  3. Supervise and assist with all program staff and areas. Report any needs or issues to the Director
  4. Provide quality programming and progressive skill development for staff and campers
  5. Schedule staff and campers into land program areas
  6. Perform daily visual observation of staff
  7. Responsible for maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment in all program areas
  8. Responsible for readiness of all activities at the beginning and close of each activity day
  9. Assist with supervision and evaluation program staff three times a season (pre-season, mid-season and post)
  10. Assist in opening/closing day activities as needed including Sunday night activity sign up during summer season
  11. Develop and maintain Program Manuals
  12. Assist with staff training
  13. Assist in organizing evening programs and camp-wide activities
  14. Supervise campers during Free Time
  15. Participate in the Director of the Day
  16. Assist with Vespers
  17. Participate in performing nightly bed checks of campers and staff
  18. Create and be able to implement a “rainy day” plan along with additional SC Directors
  19. Attend all staff meetings
  20. Assume additional responsibilities as directed by camp directors
  21. Complete and maintain on an ongoing basis the designated areas for accreditation with the American Camp Association
  22. Strive to ensure all land programs areas are safe, fun, challenging, and promote youth development and skill progression
  23. Must be committed to carrying out the basic team purpose of YMCA Camp Winona and the Volusia Flagler YMCA
  24. Ability to serve and respond in a positive, respectful, timely, caring manner to a diverse background of user groups


  1. Minimum of 21 years of age
  2. Current First Aid and CPR
  3. Knowledge of or the willingness to get training in High and Low Ropes, paintball, archery, riflery, waterfront, teambuilding and all other program areas
  4. Supervisory Experience
  5. Computer skills, including Access, Excel , Word, and PowerPoint

Leadership Staff
(Must be 21 years or older)

Boys / Girls Village Director— Responsible for all cabin life aspects of camp. Will oversee the boys/girls villages and lead staff and campers when they are not in program activities. They will oversee all cabin times and daily routines when not in program time. They are responsible for the well-being of campers and staff.

Waterfront Director – Supervise all aspects of the YMCA Camp Winona aquatic activities including swimming, fishing, paddlesports and sailing sports. Schedules and evaluates staff and oversees program implementation. The applicant must have a current Lifeguard certification and experience in lakefront situations. Senior Counselors

Senior Counselor – Working with children a plus. Counselors will be living in a cabin with 8-12 youth and leading outdoor camp activities daily. Enthusiasm, patience and a willingness to learn is required.

-Must be 18 years of age or older.
-Lives in the cabin with 8-12 campers serving as their counselor and leader.
-Provides leadership in one or more program activity areas.

Support Staff

Kitchen Assistant

To assist the Food Service Manager and Cook in preparing and serving nutritious meals and in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and dishwashing area.

Essential Job Functions:

Assist in the daily operations of the camp food service.

  • Assist in the preparation of food as the menu indicates including washing and peeling.
  • Set up food, supplies, and utensils for dining hall distribution.
  • Store food and leftovers at the proper temperature.

Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment.

  • Clean and maintain all food-preparation and storage areas.
  • Wash all dishes, serving and preparation equipment, and utensils according to regulated washing methods and temperatures.
  • Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camp’s procedures.

Assist in the preparation and packaging of food for use outside the camp dining hall.

  • Work with cooks and other staff in reviewing pack out requests to ensure adequate and accurate amounts and variety.
  • Advise staff on equipment or preparation materials needed for identified menu choices.

Other Job Duties:

Kitchen assistant positions vary widely in camp settings.  Considerations for job duties are made based on the size of the kitchen staff; food service styles (such as buffet, family-style etc.); Kitchen assistants may share many tasks as included above or may be segregated into food preparation, dishwashing, and dining hall service, again based on the listed factors.



Kitchen assistants have a designated relationship with their supervisor, the Food Service Manager or cook, and through them may relate directly or indirectly to program staff and Counselors. Kitchen Assistants may be under the age of 18 and therefore may require additional supervision when not on kitchen duty.  Adherence to Child Labor laws is essential.

Qualifications:  (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • The desire to work in the food service area.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and serving, storage of food and dishwashing procedures is preferred.
  • Obtain proper food service credentials.


Physical Aspects of the Job:

  • Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds including unloading food, carry trays of dishes, lifting supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Visual ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards.
  • Physical ability to operate kitchen equipment according to safe recommended methods.
  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
  • Determine cleanliness of dishes, food surfaces, and kitchen area.
  • Drug and background screening are required.
